With the constant changing of the times, the set
traditions and norms also observe a slight variation. Similar is the case
with the Rakhi, which is an ancient Indian festival. From the medieval
times, this festival has also seen a few changes in the way it is performed.
Though it feels good to perceive that the real essence has been kept intact
the same from where it first started.
In the early years, the festival of Rakhi used to assume lot more weightage
in the terms of keeping the promises above all. We have scores of cases
where the helps had been sought even with having a vast difference in the
cast, creed and religion of the concerning person. In those times, the
festival was assumed to create a strong bond to help protection above all.
Prayers and blessings were a key to relish a particular festival in the
medieval times. The family gathering was thought as the way to celebrate the
Rakhi. Even today we see the family gathering and people sharing sweets,
gifts and other accessories throughout the day.
The trend to share the gifts has taken the place above all, and along with
siblings, other family members also take pleasure in sharing lots of gifts.
The blessing ceremony of past now has taken over the form of gift sharing in
a large way.
The trends followed now are the same what it were used to be in the past,
as the rakhis and the sweets are purchased and made usually sooner than the
final day. All the family members take a bath to get rid of impurities of
mind and body before starting any preparations. The sisters could be seen
with the thali for the poojan.
Among the offerings, the elders are given preference and they take the
entire family along. Now outdoors activities are given more preference than
the rest indoor activities and family often taken a time-out to any location
to spend the entire day. Thus we see that a festival of siblings delights
almost all the members of a family, and even binds them for a good and
bright future.
