India is considered as the origin place for the
festival of Rakhi, and its origin is supposed to have started sometimes in
the medieval era. There are various theories prompting the names of a lot of
people involved in initiating the festival of Rakhi. The older Indian
scriptures are almost filled with the instances suggesting the prevalence of
the festival in those ancient times. Some find mentions while others are not
rated as the authentic proof about the origin of the Rakhi in India.
The first and foremost among the theories is of the Rani Karnawati and
Emperor Humayun. For the period of the medieval era in India, Rajputs were
struggling to crush the effect of Muslim invasions. Even then, the Rakhi was
prevalent and considered a spiritual binding through which the protection of
sisters was principal. A well-known event might depict how till then Rakhi
had traversed all the religious barriers.
If the olden scriptures are to be taken into account, then it was Rani
Karnawati who tied the first Rakhi, though not directly. Rani Karnawati, the
widowed queen of the king of Chittor, was in deep trouble when she
comprehended an eminent danger. She sent a Rakhi to Emperor Humayun, as she
got to know that in no way she could guard the incursion of the Sultan of
Gujarat, Bahadur Shah. Her gesture moved the Emperor completely and he took
his troops along to save her without wasting any time.
From there itself, a fine tradition received a boost in which brothers are
supposed to take full care of their sisters or whom they care most. So we
could easily say that it was Rani Karnawati and Emperor Humayun who started
a tradition almost hidden in the vague Indian History.
